A checklist for improving material flow before you automate

Investing in automation can transform an operation but only if the underlying processes are ready for it.

Too often, companies focus on selecting vehicles before understanding how materials actually move through their facility. The result is automation that solves one problem while creating new bottlenecks somewhere else.

Whether you’re planning your first automation project or expanding an existing system, use this checklist to evaluate your readiness for improving material flow.

  1. Map Your Current Material Movement
Before introducing any automation, document how materials move throughout your operation today. Identify where delays occur, where products wait, and where manual workarounds have become part of everyday operations.

You can’t optimize what you haven’t measured.

  2. Identify Bottlenecks, Not Just Labor Challenges
Labor shortages may trigger an automation project, but they’re rarely the only issue. Look for congestion, inconsistent workflows, unnecessary travel distances, and areas where materials spend more time waiting than moving.

The goal is improving material flow, not simply replacing manual tasks.

  3. Think Beyond Individual Vehicles
Modern automation isn’t just about AGVs or AMRs. The greatest gains often come from coordinating multiple technologies through intelligent software that manages traffic, priorities, and workflows across an entire facility.

Focus on how every system works together.

  4. Plan for Growth
Your operation won’t look the same five years from now. Choose automation solutions that can expand with new production lines, changing layouts, and increasing throughput without requiring a complete redesign.

Scalability should be part of the plan from day one.

  5. Include IT Early
Automation is no longer just an operations project. Vehicles, software, ERP systems, WMS platforms, and production equipment all need to communicate effectively. Bringing IT into the planning process early helps avoid costly integration challenges later.

  6. Choose a Long-Term Partner
Successful automation means continuous optimization, software updates, performance monitoring, and ongoing support. All play an important role in improving material flow over time.

The right partner should help your operation evolve, not simply deliver equipment.

  7. Material Flow Is a Continuous Journey
The most successful automation strategies begin with a clear understanding of how materials move today and how they’ll need to move tomorrow.

At FORMOVA, that’s the philosophy behind Total Automation Intelligence: combining advanced mobile automation, intelligent software, and expert support to create material flow systems that become smarter, more connected, and more valuable over time.
